We treat the full spectrum of vocal disorders in children, including:

  • Hoarseness: raspy or harsh quality of the voice
  • Vocal cord nodules: calluses that form on the vocal cords
  • Vocal cord papillomas: growths on the vocal cords
  • Vocal cord paralysis: one or both vocal cords are immobile

Your child will be treated by health care professionals with experience and training in treating and managing the unique healthcare needs of children. Our team offers integrated, comprehensive care that is designed to minimize stress and anxiety for both children and their patients.

Tests

Nasal Endoscopy
Your child’s ENT doctor inserts a thin, flexible tube (endoscope) with a tiny camera to closely inspect the vocal cords to obtain a better view of this area.

Imaging
Computerized tomography (CT) scan, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), or an X-ray can help your child’s doctor determine the underlying cause of the vocal cord condition.

Blood Test
A blood test may be used to help your child’s doctor determine the underlying cause of the vocal cord condition.

Treatments

Improving Vocal Hygiene
Your child should drink plenty of water, control and limit raising the voice, regularly rest the voice, and use a humidifier at home.

Voice Therapy
A voice therapist can help your child perform exercises and practice techniques to lessen the effects of a voice disorder.

Surgery
In more extreme cases, your child’s ENT specialist may recommend surgery to correct the voice disorder. Minimally invasive surgery may be an option.
