In normal circumstances there is an essential balance between the control of bleeding after an injury, or surgery, and assuring that clotting is not excessive. If clotting proceeds excessively, the result is an abnormal blood clot, referred to as a thrombosis. A thrombosis is when an abnormal clot forms within a blood vessel. Depending on the size and location of the thrombosis, it can result in death, stroke, heart attack, pulmonary embolism (blood clot in the lungs).

If you have had a thrombosis, it may be because your blood clots too easily. You may form clots even when you aren’t injured. These clots can be dangerous if they travel to your lungs, legs, or brain.

At the University of Miami Health System, our experienced hematologists treat all types of bleeding and clotting disorders. We provide comprehensive care to help lower your risk for serious complications.

Tests

Medical History and Physical Exam
Different patterns of thrombosis may indicate the cause and most effective therapy. Your doctor will ask questions about your medical and family history that can help reveal the cause of clotting disorders.

Genetic Testing
If you have a bleeding or clotting disorder, you may benefit from genetic testing or preconception counseling. These tests can reveal the cause of your disorder and help you understand your risk for passing it on to your children.

Blood Tests
Your doctor may take a blood sample to examine in a lab. The blood tests can reveal problems with clotting factor proteins or platelets.

Treatments

Anticoagulant Medicines
The mainstay of treatment and prevention of thrombosis is use of anticoagulant medicines. Your doctor will prescribe the appropriate anticoagulant for your specific disorder.
