Abnormal uterine bleeding occurs outside of a woman's normal period and menstrual cycle. It may include:
- Bleeding after menopause
- Bleeding after sex
- Bleeding between periods
- Heavy bleeding during your period (changing tampons every hour or two)
- Irregular cycles that vary by more than seven to nine days (such as having a 28-day cycle and then a 38-day cycle)
- Menstrual cycles longer than 35 days or shorter than 21 days
If you have any of these symptoms, you may have a menstrual disorder that requires care from a gynecologist. The experts at University of Miami Health can help with advanced, compassionate care.
Treatments
Hormone Medicines
Some hormones, such as birth control pills, can control causes of abnormal bleeding or make periods lighter.
Medicines
Your gynecologist may prescribe medicines that can treat heavy bleeding, bleeding disorders, or infections that cause abnormal uterine bleeding.
Endometrial Ablation
During endometrial ablation, your gynecologist uses specialized tools to heat and destroy your uterine lining, which typically stops you from having a period.
Hysterectomy
If you do not want to carry children in the future and you have significant abnormal bleeding, the gynecologist can remove your uterus during a minimally invasive robotic hysterectomy.
Tests
Physical Exam
Your gynecologist will look for causes of abnormal bleeding during a gynecologic exam. They may also ask about your menstrual cycle, including cycle length, length of period, and type of bleeding.
Blood Tests
Your gynecologist may also use blood tests to check your hormone levels or look for bleeding disorders.
Pap Smear
You may have a Pap smear to check for cervical cancer or sexually transmitted infections.
Ultrasound
An ultrasound can reveal certain causes of abnormal bleeding, such as polycystic ovarian syndrome, uterine fibroids, or endometriosis. The tests use sound waves to create an image of your organs
Hysteroscopy
For this test, your gynecologist will insert a thin camera through your vagina and cervix and into your uterus to examine for causes of abnormal bleeding.
