Why Do You Need a Primary Care Provider?

Think of primary care as your medical “home base” and your primary care provider (PCP) as your guide throughout your health and wellness journey.

Your PCP is a medical professional whom you can trust to give you regular checkups, refer you to specialists if needed, evaluate your medical history, assess your disease risk, and monitor your physical and mental health. They can also help you make informed decisions about your health, about necessary health screenings and tests, and advise you on lifestyle choices that may impact your health.

Your PCP can serve as your healthcare advocate only if you are open and honest with them about your lifestyle choices, symptoms, and mental health. You can confide in your PCP about substance abuse, trouble sleeping, any violence in your life, sexual dysfunction, or concerns about depression and anxiety. In return, your PCP will be straightforward about the potential health implications if you exceed a recommended weight, continue smoking, engage in risky behaviors, or neglect to take your medications as prescribed.

Make an appointment to see your primary care provider at least once a year, even if you feel healthy. Use this opportunity to ask questions about your medications and supplements and discuss lifestyle changes such as family planning, training for a marathon, new sexual partners, becoming a morning person, losing a loved one, or rising stress levels.
