A semen analysis is a common test used to identify possible male infertility. It is painless and completed in a doctor’s office. Experts at the University of Miami Health System use semen analysis to help you learn more about your ability to father a child.
Who Is a Candidate?
If a couple has not been able to conceive a child after one year of trying, the man may need to undergo semen analysis to check for possible causes. Women may undergo different tests and examinations to look for causes of infertility.
What to Expect
For a semen analysis, you will need to stimulate your genitals in order to leave a sperm sample in a cup for the doctor to examine. You may be able to do this at home or at your doctor’s office. You may also be able to collect a sample during intercourse using a specialized condom. Please follow all instructions your doctor gives you as carefully as possible when collecting a semen sample. Do not use any lubricants that are not provided by your doctor.
Your semen sample is then examined in a lab for properties like:
- Sperm count (how many sperm are in the semen sample)
- Sperm motility (how well sperm swim)
- Sperm morphology (the shape and size of the sperm)
- Sperm viability (how many sperm are alive and moving)
After your semen analysis, your doctor will talk to you about your results and what they mean for your fertility. They will discuss with you any other steps you need to take to father a child.
