What should you eat at your age?
As you age and enter various stages of life (young adulthood, pregnancy, mid-life, menopause), your body needs different nutrients to feel and look your best. If you’re of a certain age, you’ve undoubtedly noticed that you can no longer “get away with” eating pizza and ice cream like a teenager. Aging bodies process and use calories, vitamins, fats, and proteins differently.
You may not know your body’s unmet nutritional needs until you gain unwanted weight, develop high cholesterol blood pressure, or become pre-diabetic. But, beyond disease prevention and management, your diet can also contribute to your mood and mental health; immune system; bone strength; sexual health; cognitive function; and the appearance of your hair, skin, and nails.
What you eat should not be based solely on your dress size.
Your muscles, organs, and bones need certain amounts of calories, fats (yes, fats are an essential nutrient in every diet), proteins, vitamins, and minerals to function properly. Let’s not forget your brain because these building blocks of nutrition also fuel your cognitive function. If you deprive yourself of enough calories and nutrients, your essential bodily functions — in addition to your energy level, sexual desire, and mood — will suffer.
The Nutrition Services providers at UHealth Comprehensive Women’s Health Alliance can support your overall health and wellness through evidence-based nutrition recommendations. Our registered dietitians will consider your age, underlying health conditions, other disease risk factors, and lifestyle to design a nutrition and/or meal plan to help you reach your goals. You can discuss your food preferences and gain exposure to new foods and recipes that are both nutritious and delicious.
