Interventional radiology refers to minimally invasive procedures that diagnose and treat a variety of conditions. Interventional radiologists insert a catheter (thin, flexible tube) through a tiny incision in your wrist or upper thigh and into a large blood vessel. We use X-ray, ultrasound, and other imaging techniques during the procedure to guide the catheter.

This less-invasive approach can offer an alternative to surgery for many people. Since interventional radiology procedures only require a small incision, it means you experience less pain and a faster recovery than with traditional surgery. Usually, interventional radiology procedures won’t need an overnight hospital stay.

What to Expect

  • Angiogram

    An angiogram is an X-ray guided test that uses a special dye to allow your doctor to examine inside your blood vessels and check for blockages. In some instances, interventional radiologists can diagnose and treat the condition in a single procedure. Doctors also use noninvasive angiogram approaches, including magnetic resonance angiograms (MRA) and computed tomography angiograms (CTA).

  • Intravascular ultrasound (IVUS)

    Like an angiogram, IVUS allows your doctor to examine the inside of your arteries and evaluate problems, such as narrowing or blockages, but this approach uses ultrasound-guidance instead of X-ray. During the procedure, your doctor inserts a tiny sound probe (transducer) that’s on the tip of a catheter (thin, flexible tube) and guides it to the area. The transducer uses high-frequency sound waves to create pictures of the inside of a blood vessel and the layers of the vessel wall — an angiogram doesn’t show this level of detail. IVUS is also used to guide treatments, such as aneurysm repair, angioplasty, stenting, and others, as well as during minimally invasive surgeries.

  • Aneurysm repair

    An aneurysm is a weakening in a blood vessel wall that causes it to bulge or tear. Some can be treated with interventional radiology. To repair it, your doctor uses a catheter to place a stent or coil in the weakened area of the blood vessel to stop it from breaking open.

  • Angioplasty and stenting

    Angioplasty is a technique that opens blocked or narrowed blood vessels. During the procedure, your doctor uses a catheter with a deflated balloon, guides it to the narrowed area, and inflates the balloon to open the vessel and improve blood flow. Sometimes, doctors place a mesh tube (stent) in the blood vessel to hold it open.

  • NanoKnife®

    This targeted cancer treatment, also called irreversible electroporation (IRE), destroys small, hard-to-reach, soft-tissue tumors, particularly those that have spread to the liver, kidneys, or lungs. Electrical energy is directly applied into tumors to destroy cancer cells without harming healthy tissue. NanoKnife® causes few side effects and scarring, so it can be used multiple times if new tumors develop. Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center is the first provider in Florida and one of only a few facilities worldwide to offer this treatment.

  • Thrombolysis/thrombectomy

    These procedures break up a blood clot (embolism) in a blood vessel. Your doctor uses a catheter to guide clot-dissolving medicine to the clot or a device to break it up. Thrombolysis can be used to treat deep vein thrombosis (blood clot deep in the legs), open blocked vessels in people receiving dialysis, or for other conditions.

  • Vertebral compression fracture treatments

    A vertebral compression fracture (VCF) occurs when one of the bones that make up your spine (vertebra) breaks. We offer two minimally invasive procedures that use a hollow needle to deliver therapy:

    • Vertebroplasty: Injects a cement mixture into the fractured vertebra to repair it
    • Kyphoplasty: Inserts a balloon into the bone to restore the original shape and height of the vertebra. It creates a cavity, which will be filled with cement
