You should consider genetic testing at Sylvester if:

  • A person in your family has already been diagnosed with hereditary cancer, or their genetic test results show a genetic mutation, then any family members who could have inherited the genetic mutation should consider genetic testing, even if they have not (yet) had cancer.
  • Several people on the same side of your family are diagnosed with the same or a related type of cancer.
  • One or more family members have a type of cancer that could be hereditary, including certain types of ovarian, breast, pancreatic, or colorectal cancer.
  • There's a rare type of cancer in your family, such as retinoblastoma or male breast cancer.
  • Someone in your family gets more than one cancer.
  • One or more family members have developed cancer at a younger age than what's typical for that kind of cancer.
  • You're of Ashkenazi Jewish ancestry with a personal or family history of ovarian, breast, or pancreatic cancer.
  • You have polyposis (multiple internal polyps) or familial adenomatous polyposis – conditions that cause growths (polyps) in your colon.
  • If you have an advanced cancer.

What are the types of genetic tests?

Your health care team at Sylvester will recommend which tests are right for you based on your personal and family health history. We use a sample of your blood or saliva to look for inherited gene mutations.

The types of genetic tests include:

  • Multigene panel testing. This testing checks for mutations on several different genes. More than one gene can cause cancer, so counselors often recommend this type of testing.
  • Site-specific testing. If a family member's genetic test results showed a specific gene mutation, your counselor might recommend this type of testing.
