The conjunctiva is a mucous membrane that covers the front of the eye and lines the inner eyelid. Sometimes called eyelid cancer, it usually grows on the surface of the conjunctiva, but the cancer cells can grow into and around the eye.

These cancers are generally slow-growing. They rarely spread to another part of the body. Conjunctival squamous cell tumors are on the rise, however. This is related to HPV (human papilloma virus) and sun exposure.

Tests

In addition to other tests and a medical history, the following test may be specifically recommended to assess for squamous cell cancer of the conjunctiva.

Ocular Coherence Tomography
OCT helps diagnose squamous cell eye cancers. It is like having an optical biopsy because it can distinguish benign from malignant cells.

Treatments

Treatment of squamous cell cancer of the conjunctiva includes surgery to remove the cancer, freezing therapy (cryotherapy) and a revolutionary topical, potentially curable, chemotherapy.
