Skin cancers, including basal cell and squamous cell cancers and melanoma are the most common of all cancers. Melanoma originates in the pigment cells, melanocytes. It accounts for less than five percent of skin cancer cases, but is the most likely to spread to other organs.
Skin has many functions. It protects your internal organs from heat, sunlight, injury, and infection; control of body temperature, and vitamin D production. The skin's two main layers are the epidermis, the outermost layer, and the dermis, or the inner layer. Most skin cancers start in the epidermis, which contains three kinds of cells: squamous cells, basal cells, and melanocytes.
