A thyroid disorder is a condition that impacts the thyroid gland, which is a gland located in the front of the neck that helps to regulate several metabolic processes through the body. These conditions affect both males and females.

Hypothyroidism (low levels of thyroid hormone) can cause women to not ovulate or to have a miscarriage. Both males and females with an untreated thyroid disorder can have lower than usual libidos (level of sexual desire), which may lead to problems getting pregnant.

Types of thyroid disorders include:

  • Hyperthyroidism: the thyroid gland produces too much thyroid hormone
  • Hypothyroidism: the thyroid gland doesn’t produce enough thyroid hormone
  • Thyroid cancer
  • Thyroid nodules: abnormal lumps or masses in the thyroid

Symptoms of hyperthyroidism include:

  • Elevated heart rate
  • Fatigue
  • Losing weight without trying or change in habits
  • Needing to have a bowel movement more often than usual
  • Nervousness
  • Sweating more than usual
  • Tremors
  • Trouble concentrating

Symptoms of hypothyroidism include:

  • Aching in the muscles and joints
  • Constipation
  • Depression
  • Dry skin
  • Fatigue
  • Feeling cold all the time
  • Prolonged or excessive menstrual bleeding (in females)
  • Retaining extra fluid in the body
  • Trouble concentrating

The main symptoms of a thyroid nodule is feeling an unusual lump or bump in the front of the throat, where the thyroid is located.

Treatments

Medication
Your doctor may prescribe a medication to help regulate a thyroid problem. The type of medication prescribed depends on your specific situation and the underlying causes.

Micro and Robotic Surgery
Micro and robotic surgery is a minimally invasive procedure used to remove nodules that are causing a thyroid problem. Our experienced team includes a specialist in these types of surgeries, including single incision laparoscopic surgery.

Tests

Hormone Testing
Hormone testing may be recommended, as certain hormones increase and decrease in production at various times.

Physical Examination
A complete physical examination (including testing for infection) will be necessary.
