The Division of Pediatric & Developmental Pathology offers expert pediatric and perinatal autopsy consultation for hospitals, medical examiner/coroner offices (where appropriate), and referring pathologists seeking subspecialty input in fetal, neonatal, infant, child, adolescent and young adult deaths. Our consultation practice supports diagnostic clarification, clinicopathologic correlation, family counseling, quality improvement, and multidisciplinary case review.

Consultation Services Page 1

Case Types Commonly Referred:

  • Unexplained fetal or infant demise (including sudden unexpected infant death/SUID considerations)
  • Prematurity-related mortality and complications of intensive care
  • Congenital malformations (cardiac, CNS, syndromic patterns)
  • Suspected infection (TORCH, sepsis, viral pneumonitis, myocarditis, etc.)

What We Can Review Page 1
  • The body of a decedent to perform a complete autopsy assessment, or
  • Autopsy final report and/or provisional report
  • Macroscopic (gross) description, autopsy worksheet, and macroscopic (gross) photographs
  • Histology slides and/or blocks (H&E and special stains)
  • Placenta or placental slides and/or blocks; report; gross photos
  • Relevant imaging reports, laboratory results, microbiology, genetic testing, and clinical summaries
Education and Multidisciplinary Review Page 1

We support referring teams with:

  • case-based teaching when requested
  • participation in morbidity & mortality discussions (scheduling permitting)
  • structured clinicopathologic correlation for complex cases
How to Submit a Case Page 1

Step 1: Contact the Service at 305-243-7284 or pathology@med.miami.edu

Step 2: Provide Case Documentation

Include (as available):

  • patient age, sex, key clinical history, and circumstances of death
  • location of death and jurisdictional context (hospital vs ME/coroner involvement)
  • relevant prenatal history (for fetal/neonatal cases)
  • clinical differential diagnosis and specific questions for the consultant
  • prior pathology, imaging, microbiology, and genetic results

Step 3: Send Materials

  • Recommended minimum package (most cases):
    • Autopsy report (or draft)
    • Representative H&E slides from major organs and lesions
    • Macroscopic (gross) photos (digital files acceptable)
    • Placental slides/report if applicable
  • When higher complexity is expected, consider sending:
    • all slides (or a comprehensive set)
    • paraffin blocks for additional levels/IHC
    • retained tissues (where policy allows) and documentation of fixation conditions
Turnaround Time Page 1
  • For a complete autopsy: 30 to 60 working days, depending on the complexity of the case. In some cases, a longer period will be required.
  • Typical consultation turnaround depends on case complexity and completeness of submitted materials:
    • Slide review only: ~5–10 business days
    • Cases requiring additional stains/levels: ~10–20 business days
    • Highly complex cases (extensive ancillary testing, multidisciplinary correlation): timing determined case-by-case

Expedited review may be possible for time-sensitive clinical conferences or family meetings; please indicate urgency at intake.
