Lymphedema is swelling due to lymphatic fluid build-up in the tissues. Lymphedema happens most often in the arms and legs, but can also affect the head, chest, breast, abdomen, and the genital area.
Aside from swelling, symptoms of lymphedema include loss of joint flexibility, skin tightness, pain, or a full or heavy feeling in the affected body part. Left untreated, lymphedema can cause mobility problems, infections, and recurring skin problems.
Lymphedema can be primary (a rare inherited abnormality) or secondary (caused by another disease or condition). Swelling caused by secondary lymphedema comes from:
- Infections
- Cancer cells that block lymph nodes or vessels
- Surgery to remove lymph nodes and vessels
- Scarring from radiation treatment for cancer
- Inflammatory conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis
- Cardiovascular diseases that affect blood flow
