Does UHealth accept my insurance plan?

University of Miami Health System hospitals and clinics accept all indemnity insurance products (traditional major medical), Campus, Workers Compensation, Medicare, and Medicaid. The health system and its doctors also contract with several managed health organizations, such as health maintenance organizations (HMOs) and preferred provider organizations (PPOs).

Please bring all insurance information, including insurance cards, when you come to your appointment. Many medical insurance companies, as well as HMOs, require preauthorization for medical services. Please consult with your insurance company or primary care physician to obtain a preauthorization, if required, prior to the date of your appointment.

For more information regarding insurance matters or to find out if your health plan covers treatment at UHealth, please contact us at one of the following numbers:

University of Miami Hospital: 305-689-5511

Bascom Palmer Eye Institute: 305-326-6167

Hospital Billing: 800-617-7086

Physicians’ Billing: 305-326-6340

Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center: 305-243-1000

You also may contact your health plan to determine if UHealth physicians are included on the provider list.

It provides a convenient method of communicating with your doctor’s office. You can renew prescriptions, send messages, and schedule appointments – all online. Log in at www.MyUHealthChart.com.

Urgent Medical Matters

Please do not use MyUHealthChart.com to send messages requiring urgent attention. For medical emergencies, please call 911. For urgent medical matters, contact your doctor’s office.

What do I need to know before my clinic visit?

When you visit, please bring the proper insurance identification cards so that we can submit your claims to your insurance company. If you are required to file personally for your company's insurance, we will provide you with all necessary forms to file your own claim.

For your safety, you will be asked to state your name and date of birth, as well as show a photo ID.

When you complete your visit, you will be expected to pay any charges that will not be reimbursed by insurance (e.g., copayments and deductibles), unless you have made prior arrangements with one of our financial counselors.

Because your insurance coverage is a contract between you and your insurance company, it is your responsibility to obtain any physician referral precertification that your insurance company requires in order for your visit to be covered.

What to bring to your appointment

  • Your insurance card
  • Photo ID
  • Copay for your insurance plan
  • Bottles of any prescription or over-the-counter medicines that you are currently taking
  • Any other information you would like to share with your doctor

What questions should I ask my doctor or nurse?

We want you to be an active participant in your care. Sharing information among patients, staff members, and family members fosters an open environment for making good decisions.

We encourage you to know and participate in your care plan. Here are some ways you can be involved:

  • Listen carefully when the risks, benefits, and alternatives of any procedure are being explained – repeat what the doctors and nurses say in your own words and take notes.
  • Ask any questions you have. Speak up if something is unclear or confusing and keep asking until you understand.
  • Only agree to those things that you fully understand.
  • Remember that you have many rights as a patient including the right to refuse any treatments.
  • Provide complete and accurate information about your medical history, conditions, and allergies. Also, let us know if you are participating in a research study.
  • Provide us with the names of your family members or friends you want to be involved in your health care.

Treatments

  • Medicines

Your doctor may prescribe a medicine to help regulate thyroid hormone levels, such as beta blockers for hyperthyroidism or thyroid hormone replacement therapy for hypothyroidism. The type of medicine depends on your condition and symptoms.

  • Radioactive iodine

Radioactive iodine, taken as a pill, can treat hyperthyroidism by shrinking your thyroid gland and relieving symptoms. The treatment usually takes between three and six months. This treatment slows down your thyroid function and may cause hypothyroidism, so you may need to take medicine to restore normal thyroid function.

  • Surgery

If your condition requires surgery, our surgeons use advanced, minimally invasive techniques that require only a tiny incision, including robotic-assisted surgery. A smaller incision means there's minimal scarring, less pain, and a faster recovery. Our surgeons have the expertise to perform all types of thyroid surgeries, including the most complex procedures.

Tests

  • Blood tests

Blood tests measure the level of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) and thyroxine, another thyroid hormone, to diagnose thyroid disorders.

  • Radioactive iodine uptake test

This test is used to find out the cause of an overactive thyroid. Your thyroid uses iodine to create hormones. You receive a tiny amount of radioactive iodine, either as a pill or intravenously (through an IV), which allows your doctor to measure how much iodine your thyroid absorbs.

  • Thyroid scan

This imaging exam is also used to find the cause of an overactive thyroid. You receive an injection of a radioactive substance and specialized imaging equipment creates a picture of your thyroid. This test is sometimes performed as part of the radioactive iodine test.
