Sylvester offers a number of commemorative giving opportunities designed to celebrate a loved one or a special friend while supporting research programs at our cancer center. Tribute gifts at Sylvester provide much-needed funds for our groundbreaking research projects.
Gifts of $10 or more can be made in honor or in memory of an individual or group. Tribute and memorial gifts are a popular way to make a thoughtful gift recognizing a friend or family member while showing support for the cancer center. In response to each gift, a personalized card is sent to the honoree or the honoree’s family to notify them of the gift. To make a tribute gift, call 305-243-9088 or donate online through our secure form. When making a donation online, please remember to include in the comments section which card you would like the recipient to receive.
At the time of a loved one’s passing, families may choose to suggest in the obituary that donations be made to Sylvester. If that is the case, please include a mention of the memorial donation in the obituary. Here is some sample wording:
In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made to Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center in memory of [Name]. Checks should be made payable to Sylvester and mailed to Sylvester Development Office, P.O. Box 016960 (M-867), Miami, FL 33101.
“In Honor” gifts can be made in lieu of birthday and anniversary presents, or to recognize a retirement, wedding, graduation, job promotion, birthday or other special occasion. A certificate is prepared for the honoree recognizing the special occasion and including the names of all who made donations in the person’s honor. Planned giving is one of the most powerful philanthropic tools available to Sylvester’s benefactors. Gifts of stock and bonds are welcomed at the University of Miami; however, these gifts require special planning and consultation with your professional financial advisor and the University of Miami staff. The University recommends that donors who have decided to make a gift of stock contact the office of Development Services at 305-284-4444. Transfer instructions will be provided.

At Sylvester, we recognize the force behind the battle against cancer is our donors. Through their philanthropic efforts, they have helped build research labs, staffed clinics, funded scientific discoveries, and supported the education of tomorrow’s leading physicians and scientists.
As donations to Sylvester accumulate, recognition levels advance. Donors have the opportunity to make a pledge and payment over a designated time frame or simply make an outright gift. Previous philanthropic giving to Sylvester is credited to the respective giving society levels. Sylvester donors also will be recognized as donors to the University of Miami.
