Research Trainee Onboarding

The University of Miami Health System and the Miller School of Medicine (UHealth/MSOM) recognizes that our common purpose of transforming lives through teaching, patient care, research, and services includes providing opportunities to people who wish to be research trainees at UHealth/MSOM.

UHealth Research Trainees

Research trainees are individuals undergoing training in a research setting. Research trainees learn under the supervision of experienced researchers or professors to gain hands-on experience in conducting research, developing research skills, and learning about the methodologies and techniques used in their respective fields. They may be undergraduate or graduate students, recent graduates, or individuals transitioning into research-oriented roles.

Trainees require direct supervision and do not perform research autonomously. Trainees may not serve in multiple training roles and assignments simultaneously and may train for a maximum of one (1) year. University of Miami (UM) and Miller School of Medicine (MSOM) students may train until matriculation at the university or medical school is complete.

Requirements

UHealth research trainees are at least 18 years old (those 16 or 17 years old are eligible to participate in our summer high school research trainee program with parent/guardian consent). University of Miami employees may be research trainees in limited circumstances.

To become a UHealth/MSOM research trainee, you need to:

  • Identify and secure the department and supervisor for your desired research trainee position. Prior sponsorship confirmation is required before applying.
  • Complete an online application
  • Meet all occupational health requirements, including proof of required immunizations, vaccinations, and recent TB Test (within 12 months)
  • Complete a security background check and drug screening
  • Complete and pass online training modules
  • Attend mandatory virtual UHealth Care Orientation held on the first Wednesday of each month.

All research trainees receive compulsory training on UHealth policies and procedures and must follow these requirements, including maintaining patient confidentiality according to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), Code of Conduct, Bloodborne Pathogens, and Lab Safety, among other training courses depending on their specific research environment.
