Enrique Mesri, Ph.D.
- Microbiology and Immunology
Dr. Mesri’s lab focuses on how viruses cause cancer in vulnerable populations. They study Kaposi's sarcoma herpesvirus (KSHV), the causal agent of Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) and KSHV lymphomas that are cancers that affect individuals with HIV/ AIDS. KS is characterized by micro-vessel proliferation (angiogenesis). Elucidation of the mechanism of cell transformation and activation of angiogenesis by KSHV is the key for the identification of viral and host therapeutic targets and is leading to the development of anti-viral and anti-tumor approaches to cure KSHV cancers.
