Chordomas are a primary malignant type of bone cancer that can grow in the base of the skull or the lower back.

They are usually slow-growing and can invade nearby bone, which puts pressure on nerve tissue. These tumors can also recur and spread to other areas of the body, even after being removed.

Chordomas are most commonly diagnosed in people between 50-60 years of age and are more common in men than women.

Although treatment typically involves surgery and radiation, chordomas have a high recurrence rate and can be difficult to remove altogether.
