Sylvester’s Catchment Area

Sylvester’s catchment area (CA), a four-county region (Broward, Miami-Dade, Monroe, and Palm Beach) home to more than 6.2 million residents of diverse ancestry, racial, ethnic and gender identities, and socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds. This diversity is reflected in Sylvester’s patients and the communities it reaches through research and community outreach and engagement.

We are passionate about making the difference in the health of these communities.

SCAN 360 - Explore Cancer Data Where You Live

SCAN 360 is an interactive website that aims to provide a “360-degree view” of the factors that drive patterns in cancer burden in Sylvester’s catchment area, which includes Miami-Dade, Broward, Palm Beach, and Monroe counties, as well as throughout the state of Florida. SCAN 360 visualizes cancer incidence, mortality rates, late-stage diagnosis, and years of potential life lost, and maps a variety of indicators, including sociodemographic, cancer histology and staging, risk behaviors, screening behavior, environmental factors, hazardous sites, health insurance access, prevalence of potential co-morbidities, housing characteristics, and levels of residential segregation.

Beyond South Florida

Given that South Florida is the gateway to Latin America and the Caribbean, there is great interest in pursuing collaborative science throughout this region. To date, the bulk of Sylvester’s global efforts have been oriented toward building research capacity within some of the region’s low and middle income countries.

The hope is that, with time, these efforts translate to high impact science that enables understanding of how migration and immigration affect cancer risk and outcome.
