Research Focus
The Pinheiro lab studies population-based cancer epidemiology, primarily utilizing national and state cancer registries and encompassing work locally, nationally, and internationally. The lab uses novel methods in the analyses of cancer incidence, survival, and mortality with one of the main foci being the occurrence of cancer in detailed US racial-ethnic populations (e.g., Cuban, Puerto Rican, Central American, Haitian, West Indian, Filipino), often overlooked in the general literature. The primary goal of the lab is to improve cancer surveillance methodology and achieve the most accurate characterization of cancer patterns and disparities across uniquely diverse populations, overall leading to better informed cancer prevention programming, improved screening guidance, and more targeted therapies and treatments, ultimately saving lives.
