Transnasal endoscopic procedures are minimally invasive surgical techniques used to treat brain tumors located at the base of the skull, such as pituitary tumors or meningiomas.
Who is a Candidate for a Transnasal Endoscopic rocedure?
Most common conditions treated with this approach:
- Craniopharyngioma (CP): This type of brain tumor is usually found at the top part of the pituitary gland and has both solid and cystic components. These tumors are not cancerous, but they can be difficult to cure because they may invade surrounding tissues. They are rare and comprise only 0.8% of all brain tumors, but they are more common in children. The peak age range for diagnosis is 5 to 9 years old. Most people with CP are treated with surgery, but there is a risk of the tumor returning, especially within the first year after treatment.
- Pituitary Adenomas
- Tuberculum sellae and planum sphenoidale meningiomas
What to Expect
In this procedure, a small, flexible endoscope is inserted through the nostril and guided to the site of the tumor. This allows the surgeon to visualize the tumor and surrounding structures on a high-definition monitor. Using specialized instruments, the surgeon removes the tumor through the same nostril without the need for any incisions on the face or skull. Because this procedure avoids open brain surgery, patients typically experience less pain, shorter hospital stays, and faster recovery times.
Transnasal endoscopic procedures are now considered standard of care due to their minimally invasive nature and high success rates.
