Shin splints cause pain along the shin bone (tibia) — the large bone in the front of your lower leg. This condition is common in runners, dancers, and military personnel. Shin splints are caused by overuse and strain on the muscles along the tibia, and often occurs when a person increases the intensity of their exercise regimen.
Symptoms of shin splints can include:
- Mild swelling in your lower leg
- Pain in your shinbone
- Tenderness or soreness along the inner side of your shinbone
Your doctor will conduct a complete physical examination and collect your health history to help make a diagnosis.
Your doctor may order an X-ray to check for the cause of your shin splints, such as a stress fracture or another injury.
You should use the RICE method, which includes rest, ice, compression, and elevation, while you’re at home.
Your doctor may prescribe an anti-inflammatory medication – or recommend an over-the-counter anti-inflammatory such as ibuprofen – to help reduce swelling and pain.
