Little League Shoulder

Insurance Plans

Little league shoulder most commonly affects baseball pitchers between the ages of 11 and 16. Because these athletes use their arm so often, they can put stress on the humerus (the upper arm bone). This stress can cause the growth plate (a weaker area of the bone where growth occurs) to widen.

Without treatment, continued use can damage the bone. In severe cases, the growth plate can close, meaning the arm will stop growing altogether.

Your child may have little league shoulder if they repeatedly throw overhand and experience pain and swelling in their shoulder.

Tests

Physical Exam
Your doctor will ask questions about your child’s activities and their pain. The doctor may also examine your child’s arm and have them complete certain movements.

X-rays
Your child’s doctor may order an X-ray to rule out bone fractures or other injuries.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
MRIs can reveal damage to both bones and tendons. It can be useful in ruling out other shoulder problems.

Treatments

Pain Medicines
Your child’s doctor may prescribe pain medicines to help reduce pain and inflammation.

Cold Therapy
Your child can use ice or cold packs on their shoulder to help reduce pain and swelling.

Rest
Your child will need to give their arm plenty of time to rest and heal. They may need to take four to eight weeks off of activity.

Physical Therapy
A physical therapist can help your child perform exercises to relieve pain, strengthen their arm, and prevent future problems. They can also improve your child’s throwing technique and help them slowly and safely return to play.
