At the University of Miami Health System, we understand the need for sports medicine to extend beyond the clinic — especially for school-aged athletes and club participants. Our Sports Medicine Institute Outreach Program provides certified and licensed athletic trainers (ATs) who can deliver healthcare services to your student athletes in Miami-Dade and Broward counties.
Our ATs are employed and insured by the University of Miami, providing screening services, injury assessments, injury rehabilitation, and patient education. They can also connect your student athletes to additional resources within UHealth, if needed.
We’re here to keep your student athletes healthy and engaged in active play!
What we do
Our ATs work in the athletic training rooms and on the field at each partner school and are available to student athletes and students playing club sports. They cover practices and games to provide on-the-field care for any injured student athlete. UHealth resident physicians attend home football games to assist ATs with any on-field injuries and medical emergencies.
In addition to on-the-field care, our ATs also:
- Coordinate pre-participation physicals performed by the attending physician and resident physicians during the summer before school begins.
- Help make doctor appointments for students who need more extensive medical services.
- Provide education about nutrition, hydration, proper warm-ups, cross training, and other sports performance-related topics.
- Provide injury rehabilitation and physical therapy services.
Concussion testing
All ATs are trained to evaluate student athletes for concussions and traumatic brain injuries. During practices or games, they use the Sport Concussion Assessment Tool (SCAT) for sideline testing and immediate evaluation.
At the beginning of the season, ATs also conduct ImPACT® (Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing) evaluations to gather baseline assessments for student-athletes participating in high impact sports. For students recovering from a concussion, ATs perform a post-injury ImPACT® evaluation to help in determining when the student-athlete can safely return to play or if a specialty referral is needed.
If needed, our ATs work with the UHealth concussion team to connect student-athletes with a neurologist or a primary care sports medicine physician.
