Apophysitis causes pain in your child’s bones at the growth plate (a weaker area of bone where growth takes place). This pain can happen in many bones, including in the heel, elbow (called Little Leaguer's Elbow), knee, or foot. Running, jumping, throwing, or other repetitive activities can put stress on the growth plate. This stress results in inflammation, swelling, and pain.

Tests

Physical Exam
Your child’s doctor will examine them and ask questions about their pain. A physical exam may be enough to diagnose apophysitis.

X-rays
Your child’s doctor may order an X-ray to rule out a bone fracture or other injuries.

Treatments

Pain Medicines
Your child’s doctor may prescribe pain medicines to help reduce pain and swelling.

Heel Pads
A heel pad insert in your child’s shoes can help relieve stress on the heel and prevent apophysitis.

Ice
Icing the painful area can help reduce both pain and swelling.

Rest
The main treatment for apophysitis is rest. Your child may need to take several weeks off of sports or other activities.

Physical Therapy
A physical therapist can show your child stretching exercises that can help relieve stress on the bones. They will also help them slowly return to activities.
