The University of Miami Health System and the Miller School of Medicine (UHealth/MSOM) recognizes that our common purpose of transforming lives through teaching, patient care, research, and services, includes providing opportunities to high school students who are interested in learning more about or possibly seeking a career in research.
Research trainees are students who are attending a local high school and wish to spend time assisting, learning, and observing research projects on behalf of UHealth, without receiving course credit or compensation from UHealth for these activities.
The ideal student for this role has excellent interpersonal skills and strong written and verbal communication skills. They should be curious, detail-oriented, adaptable, and flexible. They should be able to follow directions and work collaboratively.
APPLICATION/PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS:
- Complete an online application
- Students must be 16 years old or older when application is submitted
- Volunteer hours: up to 20 hours per week
- New Volunteer Orientation (NVO)
- To attend NVO: All required documentation including (background check, health documentation, ID, parental consent forms and CBL training) must be completed and submitted
To Get Started

- Upload the Individual Training Plan
- Upload the Research Trainee Letter
- Submit signed parental or guardian consent forms
- Meet all occupational health requirements, including proof of required immunizations and vaccinations
- Complete a security background check and drug screening
- Complete and pass online training modules
- Complete a mandatory volunteer orientation
