Medical Technologists
The IHL offers training opportunities using cutting-edge technology and access to obtain the histocompatibility specialty and license while serving the largest transplant program in the country during the last two years. Other laboratory areas such as Flow Cytometry, Virology, Serology, Histology and Mass Spectrometry are also highly specialized and offer an incredible opportunity for career growth and hands-on experience.
Additionally, IHL and the University of Miami promotes individual continuing education and offer several opportunities for professional and career development.
- IHL enrolls all employees of the HLA laboratory in the current topics in Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics Courses, approved by the American Board for Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (#2003-03), by the State of California (#0085) and by the State of Florida (#JP000480) for continuing education credits; and sponsored by ACHI. Presentation of teleconference and slides from "Current Topics in Histocompatibility and Transplantation for Technologists" sponsored by the Georgetown University. Each seminar is 1-1 ½ hours in length. Lectures focus on current research in the fields of transplantation and transplant immunology. Participants receive certificates with the CEU's earned for attending the seminars and this information is reported to the ACHI.
- IHL enrolls all employees on online courses through MediaLab for CE Credits in all Generalist Medical Technologist specialties offering P.A.C.E. credits and Florida Board of Clinical Laboratory Personnel credits. P.A.C.E. credits are acceptable for recertification for ASCP, BOC, AMT, and for state licensure in all states except Florida. Florida Board of Clinical Laboratory Personnel credits are listed separately in the application and available at no cost for IHL personnel.
- The University of Miami is a renowned academic and research institution. All employees have access to ULearn, an online platform with a wide spectrum of courses and training material available for all employees (i.e. leadership skills, business startup, visual communication, etc). Moreover, as part of the UM Total Rewards benefits employee package, University of Miami faculty, staff, and their eligible dependents could receive tuition remission for undergraduate and many graduate degree programs.
HLA Laboratory Director Training
As an American Society of Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (ASHI) accredited laboratory directed by an ASHI approved Director, the IHL can serve as a training laboratory for future HLA Laboratory Directors. The Director Training program provides two years of formal training in histocompatibility and transplant immunology. The director-in-training will work under the guidance of the Laboratory Director, laboratory supervisors, and laboratory personnel.
During the training period, the director-in-training will be trained in the following areas of histocompatibility testing: solid organ transplantation-deceased donor, solid organ transplantation living donor, hematopoietic stem cell/bone marrow transplantation-related donor, hematopoietic stem cell/bone marrow transplantation-unrelated donor, and histocompatibility testing for other clinical purposes. The director-in-training will also work on research projects with the director, research scientists, and laboratory personnel. The training program provided by the IHL will meet the requirements for a qualified HLA laboratory director under the ASHI, CLIA, and UNOS standards.
