Why Choose Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center?
Sylvester is an NCI-designated cancer center. The National Cancer Institute has reaffirmed us as South Florida’s only NCI-designated cancer center. We have been recognized for our scientific leadership, our commitment to training the next generation of cancer researchers and providers, as well as our engagement with the communities that we serve. For patients, this designation translates into greater access to leading-edge treatment options, including clinical trials that prioritize your specific cancer.
Sylvester is a High Performing cancer center. Rating in the nation's top 10% in cancer by the U.S. News and World Report, Sylvester is also rated as high performing in gynecological cancer surgery. A hospital's gynecological cancer surgery score is based on multiple data categories, including patient survival, prevention of prolonged hospitalizations, cancer center designation, volume, among other criteria. Hospitals that earned a high performing rating were significantly better than the national average.
More cancer clinical trials than any other South Florida hospital. As a comprehensive cancer center with research funding from the National Cancer Institute, Sylvester’s clinical trials provide you and your care team with the latest and greatest ways to prevent, detect, treat, and cure your cancer. About 25 percent of newly diagnosed gynecologic cancer patients are enrolled in clinical trials.
One of only six designated Cancer Centers of Excellence in Florida. At Sylvester, you have access to leading-edge diagnosis and treatment, through our standard treatment or clinical trials.
Sylvester treats more than 5,000 cancer patients each year. You benefit for our depth and breadth of expertise. Your dedicated team of experts at Sylvester has more experience to treat your unique cancer.
Multidisciplinary care teams provide nationally recognized expertise. In short, your physician experts talk to each other, face-to-face, on a regular basis and plan the right care for you and your specific cancer. And, you can expect that caliber of care in years to come. Sylvester also has the only gynecologic oncology fellowship in South Florida training the next generation of doctors.
Hereditary cancer expertise. As an academic center, Sylvester has board-certified genetics professionals working closely with oncology specialists to identify and manage patients and their families with hereditary cancer syndromes. They don't just tell you that you have a hereditary mutation. You and your family are supported along the way to make screening and treatment decisions.
A Dedicated Dysplasia Clinic. Pre-invasive ano-genital disease, also known as dysplasia, is common and can affect the cervix, vagina, vulva, and anus. If you have dysplasia, when appropriately treated, cancer of these sites may be prevented.
The leading South Florida center for robotic gynecologic surgery. Our advanced technology offers pinpoint precision for tumor removal: Robotics enable your surgeon to have precise control over taking only the tumor and leaving as much normal tissue as possible.
Unique near-infrared imaging for removing sentinel lymph nodes only for detection of gynecologic cancer spread. This approach offers less chance of lymphedema. By taking only the necessary lymph nodes for analysis, your surgical trauma is reduced with less chance of painful lower extremity swelling.

Specialists at the University of Miami Fertility Center offer fertility counseling for male and female cancer patients to help you explore your options and make decisions regarding fertility preservation before you undergo treatments such as chemotherapy or radiation.
