The liver is located behind the ribs on the right side of the abdomen. It filters impurities and stores nutrients your body needs. The bile ducts are thin tubes extending from the liver to the gallbladder and from the gallbladder to the small intestine. Their purpose is to transport bile, a fluid made in the liver. Bile breaks down fats during digestion.

At Sylvester, we provide the most effective treatment options for liver and bile duct cancers including gallbladder cancer, hepatoblastoma, hepatocellular carcinoma and intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma.

Our full range of therapies includes:
  • New chemotherapy and immunotherapy drugs
  • Clinical trials
  • Microwave ablation (heating cancer cells)
  • Cryoablation (freezing cancer cells to destroy them)
  • Radioembolization (Yttrium-90)
  • Chemoembolization
  • Targeted drug therapy
  • Laparoscopic and robotic-assisted surgery, stereotactic radiosurgery, and more

Our team-based approach offers you a correct diagnosis and the most targeted treatments. Your Sylvester cancer care team experts have dedicated their lives to just your type of cancer. You will always be treated as an equal member of your care team.

Why Choose Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center?

Sylvester is an NCI-designated cancer center. The National Cancer Institute has reaffirmed us as South Florida’s only NCI-designated cancer center. We have been recognized for our scientific leadership, our commitment to training the next generation of cancer researchers and providers, as well as our engagement with the communities that we serve. For patients, this designation translates into greater access to leading-edge treatment options, including clinical trials that prioritize your specific cancer.

Multidisciplinary care teams with nationally recognized expertise. Collaboration saves lives. Your care team is made up of experts in your exact type of cancer, and every single aspect of it.

Advanced radiation oncology tools. Sylvester was the first medical center in Florida, and the fourth in the country to offer resonance magnetic-guided radiation therapy. Our team is a leader in that domain. Our RapidArc® radiotherapy system delivers intensity-modulated external radiation therapy (IMRT). These tools lead to more efficient and effective treatments, shorter treatment times, pinpoint accuracy in tumor targeting and less damage to surrounding healthy tissue. Finally, our radiation oncology department also offers proton beam therapy in our state-of-the-art Dwoskin Proton Therapy Center.

More cancer clinical trials than any other South Florida hospital. If appropriate for your cancer and stage, our clinical trials provide you with the very newest ways to treat and potentially cure your cancer.

Access to precision genetic medicine. We define your cancer and its treatment by the genes driving it rather than solely its location and stage.

Nurse navigators ensure you are never alone on your cancer journey. They make sure all your records from outside Sylvester are received, coordinate specialty appointments and testing, and answer your questions.

High-volume experience with gallbladder and bile duct/biliary cancers. We offer greater precision and faster recovery for our gallbladder surgery patients.

Minimally invasive NanoKnife® radiosurgery. We provide more options for patients with inoperable or difficult-to-reach gallbladder or biliary tumors, producing little pain and requiring only a brief hospital stay.
