Dr. Cimmino models epigenetic lesions in leukemia and the genetic and pharmacological reversion of these lesions as a platform for the discovery of targeted epigenetic therapies. Epigenetic changes can enhance tumor fitness by varying the expression of oncogenes or tumor suppressors, leading to increased diversity and clonal selection. By integrating dietary and genetic models of nutrient deficiency or proficiency our goal is to understand the influence the micronutrient environment has on the epigenetic state of normal blood cells and in the progression of leukemia.
