Voluntario Wayfinder

The University of Miami Health System and the Miller School of Medicine (UHealth/MSOM) recognizes that our common purpose of transforming lives through teaching, patient care, research, and services, includes providing opportunities to people who wish to be Research trainees at UHealth/MSOM.

Who are Research Trainees?

Research trainees are individuals who volunteer or donate their services by observing or assisting with research projects on behalf of UHealth/MSOM, without receiving course credit or compensation from UHealth/MSOM for these activities.

Trainees require direct supervision and do not perform research autonomously. Trainees may not serve in multiple training roles and assignments simultaneously and may train for a maximum of one (1) year. Miller School students may train until matriculation at the medical school is complete.

Who can be a research trainee?

Anyone may apply to serve as a UHealth/MSOM Trainee if they are at least 18 years old and are U.S. citizens or legal permanent residents of the United States. (Those 16 or 17 years old are eligible to be research trainees only during the summer and with parent/guardian consent) University of Miami employees may be research trainees in limited circumstances.

To become a UHealth/MSOM research trainee, you need to:

  • Identify the department you would like to work in and secure a research trainee position with a specified department supervisor to train you
  • Complete an online application including uploading the two forms completed by the department in which you are training
  • Meet all occupational health requirements, including proof of required immunizations and vaccinations
  • Complete a security background check and drug screening
  • Complete and pass online training modules
  • Complete a mandatory volunteer orientation

All research trainees receive compulsory training on UHealth policies and procedures and must follow these requirements, including maintaining patient confidentiality according to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), Code of Conduct, Bloodborne Pathogens, and Lab Safety, among other training courses depending on their specific research environment.
