Phase 1 Clinical Trials for Cancer

At Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, we’re home to the only Academic Phase 1 clinical trials program in South Florida. This means you have access to some of the newest investigational therapies and combinations of therapies.

Since 2012, we’ve tripled the number of interventional treatments we offer and now provide therapies you can’t find at any other cancer center.

What are Phase 1 Clinical Trials?

Phase 1 is the first step in evaluating how patients will respond to new cancer therapies and treatments. At this phase, researchers — known as trial investigators in this case — only enroll and closely monitor a small number of patients.

These early-stage cancer clinical trials focus on the safety, effectiveness, dosage, and side effects of experimental cancer treatments.

Who Is Eligible for a Phase 1 Clinical Trial?

Clinical trial eligibility depends on several factors, including:

  • Age
  • Current medical condition
  • Medical history
  • Prior treatments received
  • Type and stage of cancer

Your oncologist can help determine whether you’re a good candidate for a clinical trial and which trials are available.

What to Expect During a Phase 1 Clinical Trial

If your doctor refers you for a clinical trial, you’ll need to consider the risks and benefits of Phase 1 trials. You can discuss these with your doctor and the trial investigators during your initial consultation. If your evaluation determines you’re a good fit for the trial, we will ask you to provide your informed consent. This is your statement that you understand what’s involved in the study, its risks, and potential benefits.

Once you’re enrolled and start treatment, the research team will monitor you closely to determine your response and offer any support you need.
