Your Life Beyond Cancer

Cancer survivorship doesn’t begin only after treatment. It starts the day you’re diagnosed. Whether you’re in the middle of treatment or moving into the next phase of your recovery, survivorship support remains important throughout your journey. It’s normal to feel hopeful about your future while also wondering what comes next. That’s why the team at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, part of the University of Miami Health System, is here to help you feel supported at every step — so you can not only survive, but truly thrive.

Sylvester ensures that our clinical research participants receive personalized post-study care. Our Survivorship Wellness Clinics, led by trained Oncology Clinical Research Advanced Practice Providers, serve as a critical bridge between your clinical study treatment and your long-term care as a cancer survivor. These visits are not only educational but also empowering, helping you understand your treatment journey and what to expect moving forward.

Our Survivorship Wellness Clinic services are available to patients who have been diagnosed with and treated for all types of cancers, including breast, lung, colorectal, prostate, gynecologic, head and neck, and rare cancers, as well as leukemia, lymphoma, multiple myeloma, hematologic malignancies, and solid tumors.

Your Personalized Survivorship Care

During and following your cancer treatment and research study participation at Sylvester, our survivorship care team can help address your concerns — from worries about recurrence to questions about returning to work and daily activities.

After your initial clinical trial follow-up with a cancer survivorship nurse practitioner, you should feel informed, supported, and reassured. During subsequent visits, you’ll gain a clear understanding of your treatment history, potential long-term side effects, and the next steps in your care journey.

You’ll receive a written, personalized survivorship care plan designed to help you meet your health, wellness, and lifestyle goals. You will also be introduced to services, programs, and resources tailored to your needs. Your care team can also determine whether you’re a candidate for new therapies or follow-up studies.

Your personalized survivorship care plan includes:

  • A summary of your cancer diagnosis, treatments, side effects, and prognosis during and after the research study
  • Cancer-specific follow-up visits (supplementing, not replacing your regular primary care)
  • Your site-specific surveillance schedule
  • Clear red-flag symptoms
  • Referrals as needed (nutrition, exercise, side-effect management, psychosocial support, urinary health, sexual function, endocrinology, dental care, cardiology, gastroenterology, and gynecologic screening)
  • Supportive care based on known drug toxicities
  • Management of long-term and late-onset side effects
  • Timely updates from your study sponsors
  • Contact information
  • Clear next steps

Access to Innovative, Holistic Care

Our 360-degree model of care provides continuous support — from the moment you are considered for a clinical trial, through participation, and into post-study follow-up. Survivorship visits are uniquely tailored to your diagnosis and specific clinical trial experience.

The integration of clinical trial data into your survivorship care allows early identification and management of late-onset toxicities, provides clarity on your disease trajectory, and ensures that emerging safety or efficacy data from sponsors are communicated promptly. This approach supports shared decision-making between you, your family, and your care team.

Sylvester’s Services for Cancer Survivors

While you can’t control much of your experience with cancer, you can take an active role in your survivorship journey by caring for your body and mind to improve quality of life and help lower recurrence risk.

We make it easier to access care through virtual visits and online Zoom classes. Some services are offered in person, others via telehealth, and select services are available by referral only.

Exercise Oncology and Physical Therapy/Occupational Therapy

Personalized exercise programs address fatigue, muscle loss, weakness, and deconditioning. About 80% of survivors experience fatigue after treatment, and exercise is the number one recommendation to combat it. Strength training and movement help restore energy, mobility, and muscle mass.

With guidance from specially trained exercise oncologists and physical therapists, you can become more active at home, in group classes (in person or via Zoom), at a gym, and outdoors. Benefits include healthy weight maintenance, improved mood and sleep, and a statistically lower risk of recurrence.

Nutritional Guidance

Personalized nutrition plans support energy, muscle growth, and overall wellness — especially when increasing physical activity. Benefits include healthy weight maintenance, improved mood and sleep, and lower recurrence risk.

Emotional, Social, and Psychological Support

Support is available for anxiety, depression, scanxiety, sexual health concerns, body image issues, and coping strategies for sleep, stress, and pain. We also connect patients with peer groups, caregiver support, return-to-work planning, and financial navigation.

We also offer yoga, art therapy, music therapy, massage therapy, and pastoral/spiritual care (if desired) to support overall wellbeing and stress reduction.

Monitoring for Recurrence and Secondary Cancers

Your care plan includes site- and stage-specific surveillance (clinical exams, imaging, and testing when indicated), hormone testing when appropriate, and post-radiation bone and dental surveillance to ensure early detection and peace of mind.
