Your pelvic floor is the group of muscles and tendons that support your pelvic organs, including your bladder, rectum, and reproductive organs. Gynecologic surgery and pelvic radiation therapy can weaken your pelvic floor, which can cause:
- Bowel incontinence
- Constipation
- Pelvic pain
- Sexual dysfunction
- Urinary incontinence
Pelvic rehabilitation, a type of physical therapy, can help strengthen your pelvic floor and relieve cancer treatment side effects. You work with a trained physical therapist who will create a personalized treatment plan using a variety of approaches, including:
- Biofeedback therapy to measure the strength of your pelvic floor muscles
- Education on your pelvic anatomy
- Electrical stimulation to help you control muscle contractions
- Exercises to stretch and strengthen your pelvic floor
- Massage therapy to stretch muscles and improve blood flow
Your physical therapist will guide you through exercises during your appointments and give you instructions for exercising at home. Strengthening your pelvic floor will let you take back control and return to activities with confidence. We offer you expert guidance and support every step of the way.
