Trilogy™ and TrueBeam™ linear accelerators
Six linear accelerators, including the Trilogy™ and TrueBeam™ systems by Varian, are at the core of our treatment program. The accuracy of these machines is due to their use of image-guided, 3D technology. High doses can be delivered to tiny targets in a brief period of time. The machines also adjust for any body movements during treatment. This ensures beams are always focused on your tumor. HyperArc™ is an additional feature with TrueBeam™, offering fast and efficient treatment of multiple lesions.
HyperArc™ offers fast and efficient treatment
An additional feature with TrueBeam™, this high definition form of radiosurgery can precisely deliver high doses of radiation to multiple brain tumor lesions in as little as 15 minutes. Also, the use of a mesh mask instead of a metal brace makes it much more comfortable for patients. Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center was the first to use this technology in South Florida.
RapidArc® helps protect surrounding healthy tissue
RapidArc® Rotational Radiation Therapy allows for concentrated radiation doses while protecting surrounding healthy tissues. It brings together sophisticated technologies, including Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT), Image-Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT), On-Board Imaging (OBI) and Cone Beam CT Scanning (CBCT). This advancement can significantly reduce treatment times and radiation exposure.
Eclipse™ platform for advanced dose calculation
Eclipse offers the most advanced optimization and dose calculation algorithms. Our team uses these algorithms to accurately predict radiation dose effects within the human body. Quality assurance tools (e.g., ArcCHECK® by Sun Nuclear and Portal Dosimetry by Varian) verify that the calculated dose matches the measured dose.
ViewRay MRIdian® MRI-guided radiation therapy
Our department specializes in using advanced imaging techniques to visualize high-risk areas prior to, during and after radiation treatment. Using the ViewRay MRIdian®, we can tap into the power of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to guide radiation delivery. The MRIdian® also helps us adapt a treatment plan to a patient’s anatomy immediately before treatment. Learn more.
Gamma Knife® Perfexion™ for neurosurgery
Leksell Gamma Knife® Perfexion™ is known as the gold standard in radiosurgery technology. This non-invasive alternative to traditional brain surgery uses no incisions. Multiple, precisely targeted radiation beams are directed at the exact tumor location in the brain. It is usually performed in a single outpatient session. This technology is used to treat benign lesions and brain metastasis with incredible precision.
Proton Beam Therapy — ProBeam® Compact proton therapy system by Varian
Our new Varian ProBeam® Compact single-room proton therapy system is one of only 30 such regional centers in the United States. While similar in approach to traditional radiation therapy, proton therapy does not use X-rays (high-energy photon light waves). Instead, the technique takes advantage of charged particles called protons to deliver a powerful, highly targeted blow to cancer cells. No other radiation therapy technique can match its ability to deliver doses within and around tumor cells, and not to surrounding healthy tissue.
