Hematologic cancers begin in blood-forming tissue. They usually form in the bone marrow or cells of the immune system. Also called blood cancer, they include cancers such as leukemia, myelodysplastic syndromes, myeloproliferative neoplasms, Hodgkin and non-Hodgkin lymphoma, multiple myeloma, and other plasma cell disorders.

We also treat non-cancerous bleeding and clotting conditions, factor deficiencies, hemoglobinopathies, and other abnormalities of the blood and bone marrow components.

Someone is diagnosed with a blood cancer about every four minutes in America. There are more than 200,000 new cases each year. At Sylvester, if you have a diagnosis of a blood cancer, you have immediate access to South Florida's most experienced team with the best patient outcomes. Our cancer physician-experts are members of one of the nation's top academic cancer centers. Our single focus is the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of blood cancer.

Why Choose Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center?

Sylvester is an NCI-designated cancer center. The National Cancer Institute has reaffirmed us as South Florida’s only NCI-designated cancer center. We have been recognized for our scientific leadership, our commitment to training the next generation of cancer researchers and providers, as well as our engagement with the communities that we serve. For patients, this designation translates into greater access to leading-edge treatment options, including clinical trials that prioritize your specific cancer.

Sylvester is a High Performing cancer center. Rating in the nation's top 10% in cancer by the U.S. News and World Report, Sylvester is also rated as high performing in leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma. A hospital's leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma score are based on multiple data categories, including patient outcomes, volume, cancer center designation, among other criteria. Hospitals that earned a high performing rating were significantly better than the national average.

The Cancer Epigenetics (CE) Research Program was established in 2014 at Sylvester and has become one of the leading programs in the country, actively translating discoveries into clinical trials. Its goal is to incorporate basic and clinical research in the field of cancer epigenetics. The program focuses on identifying epigenetic mechanisms regulating cancer initiation and progression. It also launches tailored epigenetic therapies to treat cancer, testing them in pre-clinical and clinical studies. The collaborative CE investigators are working to pinpoint the factors that contribute to the probability, progression, treatment, and ultimately, cure of your cancer. By identifying these mechanisms, they can get new targeted treatments to the clinical area faster.
