Advanced Training for Advanced Practice Providers

The Oncology Advanced Practice Provider Fellowship Program at Sylvester offers specialized training for APPs pursuing a career in oncology. This one-year fellowship equips APPs to manage complex cancer cases across diverse clinical settings while fostering professional growth. Participants will expand their professional network and gain experience working within a multidisciplinary health care team at South Florida’s only National Cancer Institute (NCI) designated cancer center.

Mission

Dedicated to developing future leaders in oncology through education, mentoring, and hands-on training. The program empowers APPs to enhance patient care in diverse communities using the latest research, technology and treatment innovations.

Fellowship Structure and Training

Participants will complete rotations across various University of Miami Health System (UHealth) and Sylvester locations, gaining experience in both inpatient and outpatient settings.

Program Overview (52 Weeks):

  • Hospital Orientation: 1 week
  • Didactic Training: Integrated within the 52 weeks
  • Clinical Rotations: 41 weeks
  • Elective Specialty Focus: 8 weeks
  • Vacation: 2 weeks

Eligibility Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Graduate of an accredited master’s program in a relevant field
  2. Valid State of Florida APRN License and Board Certification from a nationally accredited organization such as the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) or the American Academy of Nurse Practitioner (AANP)
  3. Valid State of Florida Physician Assistant License and Board certification as a Physician Assistant from the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA)
  4. Current Certification in BLS and ACLS
  5. Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  6. Basic Computer Knowledge in Microsoft
  7. CITI Program certification upon employment
  8. ONS Chemotherapy Immunotherapy certificate course completion upon hire or during orientation

What is the goal of the APP Oncology Fellowship? Page 1
The fellowship aims to provide APPs with an immersive experience in cancer care through comprehensive didactic and clinical training. Fellows gain a broad understanding of oncology patient care, including support for their families, while developing expertise under the guidance of clinical specialists in the field.
How is the fellowship offered? Page 1
The fellowship is offered as a full time one-year training program to an APP who has been fully credentialed post hire. The fellow is expected to participate in clinical and didactic study that encompasses the entire continuum of cancer care.
Where is the fellowship offered? Page 1
The fellowship is offered at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Miami, and the fellow may rotate through the various locations throughout Miami-Dade and Broward counties.
What nurse practitioner specialties are eligible to apply for the fellowship? Page 1
Adult-Gerontology, Family, and Acute Care specialties are encouraged to apply.
What are the selection criteria? Page 1
Minimum requirements include the following:
  • Minimum of one-year bedside nursing experience preferred
  • Experience caring for cancer patients as a registered nurse or during advanced practice clinical rotations preferred.

Is a permanent advanced practice provider position guaranteed after the completion of the one-year oncology fellowship? Page 1
Fellows are employed for the duration of the one-year program. While permanent positions within the university are not guaranteed after completion, the program emphasizes retention. Its primary goal is to integrate fellows into long-term roles within the institution, aligning with the program’s original intent.
What should I expect during the interview process? Page 1
Once the search process for APP fellows begins, you will be contacted initially for a screening interview. If selected, then the candidate will proceed to a panel interview, followed by an interview with the collaborating physician.
What stipend or benefits are offered while in the APP fellowship program? Page 1
The fellow will be an exempt full-time employee with benefits at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center. Some of the benefits include:

  • Support to attend professional conferences that are approved by the Program Director.
  • There is no guarantee of financial assistance provided for relocation or housing expenses.
What are the requirements for successful completion of the Advanced Practice Provider Oncology Fellowship Program? Page 1
  • Participates in 360° peer review process.
  • Completion of all competencies and training specified for APPs working at Sylvester.
  • Successful completion of ONS Chemotherapy Immunotherapy Certificate Course.
  • Attendance at educational sessions by the nursing and APP department.
  • Participation in department meetings of educational value.
  • Advanced Oncology Certified Nurse Practitioner (AOCNP) certification prior to completion, if applicable.
  • Attempt to publish in a peer-reviewed journal or magazine.
  • Provide an educational lecture locally or nationally.
  • Contribute to a quality/process improvement project.
What living arrangements are offered for advanced practice provider fellows? Page 1
Miami offers many options for housing that include apartments either on or off campus with the use of discount public transportation to the medical campus. Parking on the medical campus is available at an additional cost. Parking at the other Sylvester locations may offer complimentary parking.
What is the advanced practice provider fellow’s work schedule? Page 1
Typical schedule for the advanced practice provider fellow is:
  • Monday–Friday
  • No weekends or holidays, with the exception of requests made by Sylvester Administration
