Singerman and Schwartz Research Scholarship

Dr. Larry J. Singerman and Dr. Stephen G. Schwartz Research Scholarship

The Dr. Larry J. Singerman and Dr. Stephen G. Schwartz Research Scholarship enables medical students to become immersed in a high impact research experience at a critical time during their professional education. Each selected research scholar will work with a mentor at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in conducting basic, translational, or clinical research from June 1 to May 31.

Eligibility

The 12-month program is designed for students following completion of their second, third, or fourth year of medical school. Research scholars are selected based on academic achievement. Although applicants may have prior research experience, students who have not previously been involved in research are encouraged to apply. Applications will be accepted from medical students inside and outside the United States. There are no citizenship requirements for applicants, but those who are not US citizens must have and maintain an appropriate visa (all visa matters must be handled by the applicant). The Bascom Palmer Eye Institute is committed to promoting diversity within the ophthalmic community, and we encourage medical students who are underrepresented in medicine groups to apply.

Stipend and Benefits

Research scholars receive the following benefits:

  • $35,000 annual stipend
  • Allowance up to $5,000 to support travel expenses to present research work at a national meeting

Application Process

A total of 5 research scholarships will be awarded annually. Each applicant must submit the following:

  • Completed application
  • Curriculum vitae
  • Official transcripts (undergraduate and medical school)

Expectations

Research scholars are expected to assume responsibility for their research project during the year. This includes working closely with the mentor to refine the research aims and design, data collection, and data analysis. It is expected that the research will result in an original manuscript for submission to an appropriate peer-reviewed journal and a conference abstract submission. Each research scholar will present his/her research work at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute’s Annual Residents’ Day meeting.
