After Kyle David Rising-Moore was diagnosed with stage 4 colorectal cancer that had spread to his liver, he turned to a team of Sylvester physicians. Working together, his surgical oncologist and medical oncologist developed an aggressive treatment plan combining chemotherapy and complex surgery.
Rising-Moore began with six rounds of chemotherapy, followed by a complex, 11-hour surgical procedure that included a liver resection and ablation, gall bladder removal and a partial colectomy.
With the help of nurses and physical therapists, Rising-Moore was soon up and moving on his own after surgery. He was scheduled for six more rounds of chemotherapy post-surgery. But after four, his doctor pulled him out of it.
“My tests were coming back great,” said Rising-Moore. “Nothing in my margins, lymph nodes clean. The medicine worked.”
With chemotherapy behind him, Rising-Moore and his husband, Edward “Eddy” Perez, embarked on the process of adopting a child. Rising-Moore also began transitioning into a career in cancer advocacy, public speaking and writing, including persuading friends to get colonoscopies. He wrote a book about his cancer journey, "Beyond the Storm: Life in Full Color".
“I found that being treated at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center gave me a voice.”
