Biospecimen Services

The BSSR collects tumors, non-neoplastic tissue, peripheral blood, CSF and cystic fluid samples.  This includes neoplastic and non-neoplastic samples from multiple organs such as lung, kidney, liver, breast, pancreas, thyroid, thymus, lymph nodes, gastro-intestinal track, and soft tissue.

Services Include

Participant screening and enrollment under the BSSR IRB consent within:

  • University of Miami Hospital
  • Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center
  • Jackson Memorial Hospital
  • Bascom Palmer Eye Institute

Biospecimen Procurement (tissue, blood, fluid)

  • Fresh (upon request), Flash-frozen, Frozen in OCT (upon request), Formalin-fixed

Storage for all BSSR procured samples (when needed) within the Biorepository at Hussman Institute for Human Genomics (HIHG)

Storage temperatures:

  • Double-door refrigerators (4°C)
  • Freezers (-20°C)
  • Ultra-low Freezers (-80°C)
  • Liquid nitrogen (-196°C)

Biological Sample Processing

  • Plasma/Buffy coat
  • Extraction of genomic DNA and RNA isolation (by the Biorepository at HIHG upon request)
  • Patient-Derived Xenografts (PDX) (by Daniel Bilbao PhD, Developing Cancer Modeling Shared Resource at SCCC)
  • Digital whole slide scanning including H&E stain
  • Detailed microscopic image of collected tissue (upon request at no additional charge)
  • Tumor viability assessment and necrosis percentage (upon request at no additional charge)
