Research has shown that exercise is safe for survivors and can significantly improve treatment outcomes, bolster immune function and enhance overall well-being. Sylvester empowered cancer survivors through multiple fitness programs in 2025.
Stronger Together
More than 160 survivors and supporters participated in Sylvester’s Believe in You program. They trained to complete a 5K or bike ride in the DCC, the NFL’s largest philanthropic event that raises funds for cancer research at Sylvester. This innovative initiative began three years ago with only a handful of participants and has grown to offer a blend of virtual classes and in-person sessions at multiple locations. Classes included strength training, cardio, nutrition and yoga, and participants received workout equipment for home, a weekly newsletter and an online support group.
“Now survivors are in the race with us, and that’s what we are training them to do, be a part of the race and live as healthy a lifestyle as possible.”
A Plan for Every Path
Survivors also reclaimed their strength and well-being through Sylvester’s exercise oncology program. Centered on one-on-one consultations with exercise physiologists, the program created plans tailored for each survivor, based on treatment history, diagnosis, prior activity, and physical and emotional needs. Survivors put their plans into action with ongoing support and check-ins to assess progress and adjust as needed.
The exercise oncology team also put together full-length workouts on YouTube, along with in-person and virtual group exercise classes, all easily accessible and available for free.
“Many survivors are looking for what they can do next to reduce their risk of cancer coming back,” Dr. Crane said. “We know lifestyle modifications like exercise and healthy eating can reduce those risks.”
